TMJ (Jaw) pain, dysfunction and related disorders.

Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJD) refers to a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. It can result in symptoms such as jaw pain, difficulty chewing, and clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth. TMJD may stem from various factors, including jaw injuries, arthritis, or teeth grinding.

TMDs (Temporomandibular disorders) are classified according to the DC TMD which has five categories:

  1. Myalgia (Muscle pain)

  2. Arthralgia (Joint pain)

  3. Disc displacement

  4. Degenerative Joint disease (Arthritis)

Treatment is dependent on correctly diagnosing which type of TMD you have. Physical examination is of course essential however I use the following evaluation as a primary screening tool for TMD patients in my practice. I have also made it publicly available here. If you are unsure of whether to book an appointment you are welcome to fill it out and I will try to advise you on where best to start with your particular condition.

I would not advise anyone to jump to conclusions or to try and diagnose themselves without physical examination and consultation with a medical professional.
